These worksheets were downloaded directly from the New Straits Times website approximately 10 years ago.  There are over 100 reading texts with comprehension questions that are suitable for intermediate and advanced students.  I have recently checked out the website and cannot find direct access to these materials so I have copied a link to them here.  Just click on the globe reader for access to the materials.  Click on the NIE banner for access to the NST NIE website.

Reading Texts at different levels

The following give links to directories that each contain approximately 50 different reading texts along with teacher's notes to show how to conduct the reading exercise and give the answers.  The vast majority of these were taken from websites over 15 years ago and are referenced here for your perusal.

This book contains a number of activities that can be used to supplement a beginners reading course which uses phonics as its basis of introducing the letters to the pupils.  It has over 30 different activities which can be used to introduce new letters, blend sounds and recognise dolch words that do not follow the regular pattern of pronunciation.  The activities give a comprehensive guide as to how the resource can be used including an approximation of time needed for each activity, suggestions for which pupils the activity is suitable for and additional activities that can be tried to supplement the materials.

This collection of materials was compiled and collected from both mentors and teachers.  One of the main aims of the mentoring project was to enable teachers to be independent and produce their own resources and many of these are examples of their efforts.  It is difficult to acknowledge who produced which activity.

This is a workshop manual that gives instructions how to help teachers teach reading using phonics.  It gives numerous interactive activities for teachers to use for themselves and for the pupils.  It was compiled by mentors from the northern region along with teachers who gave direct input from classroom experience.

This is a collection of materials originated and compiled by mentors and teachers mainly from the State of Perak.  The chief compiler was Jerry Bishop who has been working tirelessly for years in Perak developing materials relating to phonics.  The decodable reading sheets are taken directly from the primary syllabus and practice particular sounds in repetition.  The language is simple and the illustrations accompany the texts so that the pupils understand what they are reading.  After acquiring some initial phonemes pupils can quickly move on to these readers that are an excellent stepping stone to short story reading.

This is a collection of over 200 different single page reading texts specifically designed to develop early reading skills.  Once pupils have mastered the art of blending and can use the decodable readers relatively easily they are ready to move on to more complicated texts.  The topics in thise series range from animals, fruit, food, cartoon characters, sports, sports personalities and many more.  Some are relatively simple and others a little more challenging.  The teacher should look through the materials to find the most suitable for the pupils.  Acknowledgement for the material is given on each sheet.  These were produced over 10 years ago by teachers in Malaysia - so some of the subject matter may be a little out of date. Reading skills can still be practiced however, even with out of date material.
